Project Overview

The expansion of the historic Geauga County Courthouse in Chardon Square required seamlessly connecting a modern 22,000+ square-foot addition to the original 1869 structure. The project aimed to preserve architectural integrity while modernizing building infrastructure for future use.

Geauga Mechanical was tasked with delivering mechanical systems that respected the historic character of the building while integrating modern performance standards.

Industry Served:

A spacious industrial-style loft with exposed pipes and large round columns. The space features a wall with a large mirror and multiple windows allowing natural light to enter. The flooring appears to be concrete, and there is a hint of green turf visible on the right side.

The Challenge

Bridging two centuries of construction required extraordinary precision. The exterior architecture had to match the original sandstone façade, while mechanical systems needed to integrate without compromising the fragile structure of the 150-year-old courthouse.

The building remained fully operational throughout construction, requiring:

  • Relocation of the existing chiller
  • Relocation of the emergency generator
  • Above- and below-ground utility relocations
  • Careful sequencing within a constrained site

The Solution

Geauga Mechanical coordinated system upgrades to modernize the courthouse while maintaining continuous operations.

Our team:

  • Integrated new HVAC systems with legacy infrastructure
  • Managed utility relocations within a tight footprint
  • Sequenced installation to minimize disruption
  • Delivered modern climate control compatible with historic architecture

Through careful planning and coordination, we ensured that old and new systems functioned seamlessly together.

The result

The courthouse expansion successfully combined historic preservation with modern mechanical performance. The facility now benefits from updated climate control, improved reliability, and infrastructure positioned to support long-term community use.

A crane is hoisting materials across power lines, while workers in safety vests are on the ground managing equipment. Portable toilets and a red truck are visible. The sky is overcast and there are orange safety cones marking the area.
